A conventional derailleur has been disclosed in the Taiwan Patent Nos. 533,223 and 532,469, which comprises a cage for holding a chain, a support tube for holding the cage movably along a shift rod, a first shift fork for rotating a chain guide on the cage, and a second shift fork for driving the cage along the shift rod. The rack-pinion gear is disposed between the cage and the support tube, and a rack portion of the gear is formed on an outer circumferential surface of the cage. The gear has a pair of arms that each pivotally supports a pinion. A rack portion of the gear is in mesh with a circular gear section of a rear shift fork. The circular gear section is formed on an inner circumferential surface of the second shift fork and has a pair of pawl elements that each pivotally supports one of the pinions and can shift the cage. The first shift fork is rotatably supported on the second shift fork by a pin and has a single pawl element for driving the pinion and the cage. The first shift fork is connected with a motor. When a rider turns the motor on or off, the single pawl element can drive the pinion and the cage. The gear and the circular gear section of the second shift fork each has a pair of teeth, and the teeth of the gear and the circular gear section are engaged with each other, to provide a function of holding the first shift fork in a fixed position, and to prevent movement of the cage during the shifting. This type of conventional bicycle derailleur has drawbacks. The fixed holding ability of the first shift fork cannot be improved because the pin of the first shift fork is directly connected with the circular gear section of the second shift fork, and the rotary force of the motor does not have a significant effect on the first shift fork. In addition, the gear and the circular gear section of the second shift fork have to have a predetermined clearance therebetween, which causes the shift fork to have a large overall size.
